Francesca Schiavone and Alize Cornet go through in Antwerp

Tennis: The 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and the seventh seed Alize Cornet are through to the second round of the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games in Antwerp. The former world No.4 Schiavone, who is ranked 81 in the world now, had entered the tournament as a qualifier but she stunned the world No.37 Klara Koukalova in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

The highest ranked player in action on the day, Cornet had to fight a close battle which went to the wire. The Frenchwoman lost the first set 1-6 against the 17-year-old Swiss Belinda Bencic and had to win the second before edging Bencic in a close third set as she won 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. The Belgian wildcard Alison Van Uytvanck did not disappoint the home crowd as she went through to the second round with a straight sets 6-2, 6-3 win over Magdalena Rybarikova. Last year's Wimbledon Quarterfinalist Barbora Zahlavova Strycova also booked her place in the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over wildcard, former world No.12 Yanina Wickmayer.

Annika Beck also went through with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Karin Knapp. Also Read: Kim Clijsters to Become Tournament Director of WTA Event in Antwerp Also Read: WTA Antwerp: Eugenie Bouchard and Camila Giorgi Ready to Fight!
