Tennis: Former World No.1 and 7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams survived a scare in Doha, as she saved a match point before overcoming World No.22 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in 3 sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5) to go through to the Quarterfinals in Doha. Williams was victorious in both of their previous meetings but this time Zahlavova Strycova was ranked much higher than the last time and now there is a gap of only 5 places between them in the ranking so it was expected to be a close match.
Strycova had few game points to force the first set into the tie-break but after a long game Williams broke her to take the first set 7-5. The second set also went level until 3-3, but then Czech broke Williams twice to take the second set 6-3 and force the match into a decider. 34-year-old Williams served for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Strycova broke her back there and put pressure on Williams as the American served to stay in the match at 5-6.
Williams saved a match point at 30-40 before holding the serve and forced the match into a tie-break. Also Read: The ´Old Cat´ Still Has Some Tricks... Also Read: Serena Williams tops both the WTA Singles and Road Rankings.
