Heather Watson struggles but gets past Evgeniya Rodina at Miami Open

The British No 1, Heather Watson, despite going a set down early recovered well and triumphed over Russian, Evgeniya Rodina in a strenuous first round matchup at the Miami Open. When Watson went a set down, 3-6, things seemed to look in favour of Rodina who had won both times these two had met previously.

However, the 22 year old despite excruciating conditions to level things up by taking the second 6-1. Furthermore, with the momentum on her side, Watson looked to have gotten through as she pulled ahead 5-2 in the third only to find the set leveled up at 5 games apiece.

However, Watson had that extra effort left in her which allowed her to pull through 7-5 in the final set thus finally closing the match in 2 hours and 23 minutes. "I think both of us were feeling the same, it was just who could stick it out mentally and fight through the conditions," Watson said. Watson will take on Angelique Kerber from Germany in the second round of the Miami Open.

Kerber who won the previous meeting held at Wimbledon last year had to struggle but prevailed in three sets.
