Teliana Pereira becomes first Brazilian to reach WTA Final since 1988

Tennis - Brazil's Teliana Pereira has become the first Brazilian player to reach a WTA final in 27 years after she upset the top seeded Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals of the WTA Claro Open Colsanitas. Pereira defeated Svitolina 7-6, 6-3, coming from 2-5 down in the tie-breaker to reach the final where she will meet fifth seeded Yaroslava Shvedova.

Shvedova defeated Mariana Duque-Mariño, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the other semi-final of the day. Duque-Mariño had to finish her rain-delayed quarter-final against Julia Glushko first on Saturday. That match was suspended on Friday with Duque-Mariño leading 7-5, 3-1 which she went on to win 7-5, 6-3. The last time a Brazilian player reached a WTA final was Neige Dias at Barcelona in 1988.
