World number 10 Andrea Petkovic has pulled out of her second round match against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu at the Madrid Open due to gastroenteritis. The German kicked off her Madrid campaign in solid form by beating Zarina Diyas in straight sets before being struck down with the illness.
Petkovic released a short statement via the Madrid Open’s official Twitter account.
"Last night I came down with a gastrointestinal illness and unfortunately I have to withdraw from the tournament. I really enjoy playing the Mutua Madrid Open. The fan support here is amazing & I look forward go coming back next year".
The German came into the tournament with a high amount of confidence following back to back semi-finals in Miami and Charleston as well as a straight sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Fed Cup.
Meanwhile Begu will now play in the third round of the tournament for the first time in her career.
She will play either Varvara Lepchenko or Barbora Strýcová.
