The Indo-Swiss pairing of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis regained the top spot in WTA doubles rankings as they played out a tough 6-2 7-6(5) victory over Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik to book a place in the final of the Italian Open.
Going into the tournament, Mirza and Hingis were given the top seed, however after early defeats in Stuttgart and Madrid has seen them slip down to the No 2 spot in the World rankings. However, after a run to the final in Rome, the Indo-Swiss pairing is back in the top spot and had to save a set point in the second set to earn victory in their respective semifinal.
This will be fourth time; the pairing will appear in a final of the tournament – with the previous three having resulted in tournament win in Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston. The final will be against Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic – a pairing they have defeated previously in their only meeting.
