Doubles Qualification Heats up for WTA Singapore Final

The open-endedness of the WTA Race to Singapore extends to the doubles front as well though probably not to the extent as the singles field. At the end of the days play on Thursday, the team of Katerina Srebotnik and Caroline Garcia became the sixth team to qualify for Singapore joining Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina and Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic.

Srebotnik and Garcias qualification hinged on Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka losing in the event, without winning the title. The Czech team lost to Dellacqua and Shvedova in the third round and it greatly reduced their chances of qualification, considering that they are 10th in the Race.

The Singapore slots are still open for the sisters team of Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching, who are currently seventh in the race. The sisters have made it to the Beijing semi-finals defeating Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Elena Vesnina and need to win the title in order to qualify for the elite eight-team event.

It would also be a close call between Raquel Kops-Jops and Abigail Spears and Carla Suarez Navarro and Garbine Muguruza, who are ranked eighth and ninth in the Race respectively. Muguruza, whos qualified for Singapore in the singles, pulled out of the doubles event citing an illness which affected their teams chances of Singapore qualification.

In case of the Americans, a first round loss dented their chances of trying to reach the year-end event in Singapore. Also Read Serena Posts Picture of Olympic Gold Medal!
