Promising American Sloane Sptehens, still only 18, moved into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. Stephens beat Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa for her first win in Melbourne 6-4 6-2 . Stephens is a former junior Aussie Open doubles champion.
Meanwhile, 16 year old American wild card Madison Keys was beaten 6-2, 6-1 by experienced Chinese Jie Zheng. Keys had won the USTA wild card pay off event to earn her spot in the main draw. Another American who advanced on Tuesday was 22 year old Jamie Hampton.
Hampton beat Luxembourg's Mandy Minella 6-1, 6-1 to earn a second round date with Maria Sharapova. Two mroe American women were in action on Tuesday. Qualifier Alison Riske lost in three sets to Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-4 1-6 6-2 .
Urszula is the younger sister of world n. 8 Agnieszka and had to qualify for the main draw. 22 year old American Vania King also reached the last 64 in Melbourne. King, one of the top 10 doubles players currently, beat Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6(3) 6-3 .
