Former world no. 3 Nadia Petrova has made an exit from the Australian Open in Melbourne on Thursday, losing in straight sets to little known Italian Sara Errani. It was the first meeting between the two players. Errani won 6-2 6-2 to advance to the third round.
The 29 year-old Russian unexpectedly took a medical timeout for some on-court treatment on her lower back. Errani will face Sorana Cirstea next.
