The first round match between Irina-Camelia Begu and Caroline Garcia in Charleston was marred by the Frenchwoman making a racist comment against the Romanian in the latter stages of the match. Garcia lashed out at Begu calling her a ‘Gypsy S***’ which is a racial term to describe the ethnic Roma (Gypsy) minority in Romania.
Garcia’s comments were directed at her opponent following her inconsistent performance in the final set of their match. At the time of Garcia’s outburst, the score read five-all. The 22-year old Saint Germaine native, ranked 44th in the world is regarded to be one of WTA’s brightest prospects for the future.
She eventually went on to lose the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 (3) after nearly three hours of tough play. Begu, ranked 34th in the world, will now face Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round. Bondarenko upset 16th seed Misaki Doi in their first round match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 after one hour 42 minutes of play.
The second round match will be the first meeting between Bondarenko and Begu. The potential penalising on Garcia for her frustrated venting hasn’t yet been determined even as the episode, utterly unnecessary and unwanted, left a sour taste in the mouths of everyone alike.
