The second round of the women's singles qualifiers presented some interesting results making the final round all the more intriguing. 23rd seed Viktorija Golubic was the first player through to the last round of the French Open women’s qualifiers on Thursday as she defeated Tereza Smitkova in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
The Swiss will now play ninth seeded Romanian Andreea Mitu in the final qualifying round for a spot in the women’s singles main draw. Ivana Jorovic and Sara Sorribes Tormo will face-off against each other in the third round of qualifiers after having defeated Frenchwomen Mathilde Johansson and Stephanie Foretz respectively in their second round matches.
The Serbian Jorovic defeated Johansson in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 as did the Spanish Sorribes Tormo defeat Foretz, 6-3, 6-4. Grace Min and Lucie Hradecka have set a third round match-up against each other for a spot in the main draw.
The American Min defeated Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure, while Hradecka defeated Richel Hogenkamp. 18th seed Kristina Kucova of Slovakia will play Ukrainian Maryna Zanevska for a place in the main draw. Kucova defeated Miyu Kato of Japan in the second round, while Zanevska defeated Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva.
Top-seed Louisa Chirico, who made it to the semi-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open, defeated Andrea Hlavackova to book her place in the final qualifying stage. The American will take on 24th seeded Russian Irina Kromacheva to try and make it to the last-128.
Second seed Cagla Buyucackay of Turkey will play 22nd Klara Koukalova in the third round, while third seed Sorana Cirstea will play Elise Mertens in the last qualifying round. French player Fiona Ferro also made her way into the third round of qualifiers after having outlasted American Vania King.
Ferro will play another American Saschia Vickery in the last round. Austrian Barbara Haas upset fifth seeded Swiss Stephanie Voegele and will next play Veronica Cepede Royg, who defeated Kaia Kanepi in their second round match.
Sixth seed Katerina Siniakova and 22nd seed Silvia Soler-Espinosa will play each other for a place in the main draw. Eighth seed Kateryna Kozlova will play Ipek Soylu in the final round of qualification, and lastly, veteran Daniela Hantuchova will play Jennifer Brady to play in the main draw.
