Americans Bethanie Mattek Sands and Christina McHale were both beaten in the second round of the Open GDF Suez in Paris on Thursday. Mattek Sands went down to no. 7 seed Roberta Vinci 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. McHale lost 6-2, 7-5 to Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Other early winners included Czech Klara Zakopalova, who beat Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova away, 60 63; German qualifier Mona Barthel, who beat Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier, 63 60; and No.9 seed Angelique Kerber who defeated Monica Niculescu, 63 46 63 .

Kerber will next take on top seed Maria Sharapova, in the quarterfinals.

No.2 seed Marion Bartoli scored a 75 61 win over Petra Martic. "I had never played her before so I had to try to work her out tactically speaking at the start of the match," Bartoli said.

"I was playing the ball down the middle too much and wasn't able to get enough behind my service - the first set was really wearing. But once I got the lead, things got a lot better."
