WTA Doha - Injury ends Zvonarevas title defence

The 2012 injury woes continued for former world no. 2 Vera Zvonareva as the Russian had to retire due to a left hip injury at the WTA Qatar Open in Doha on Wesnesday. The Russian was down against Romnia's Monica Niculescu, 75 32; and decided she coudl not continue.

Zvonareva was the defending champion here.

I'm disappointed I couldn't finish the match, but I did everything I could," she told reporters. "I've always had great memories from Doha - I've been here so many times and had some great results, and I was looking forward to playing my best and trying to defend my title.

But this is all part of the game.

"I'll rest for a few days and we'll see. Hopefully it's not too serious."
