WTA WUHAN AND TASHKENT: Halep reaches semis in Wuhan, qualifies for Singapore; Allertova upsets Flipkens in Tashkent

Wuhan Open Third Round The last two third round matches saw Dominika Cibulkova and Barbora Strycova come through against Karolina Pliskova and Jelena Jankovic respectively. While the 10th seeded Slovakian won against the US Open finalist in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, Strycova overcame a one-set deficit to reach the last eight.

The two played each other later in the last quarter-final of the day. Quarter-finals Simona Halep defeated Madison Keys in straight sets to reach the semi-final and thus book her place in the eight-woman season-finale in Singapore.

This is the third consecutive year that the Romanian has qualified for the year-end finals. The fourth seed won 6-4, 6-2 in 69 minutes and will play Petra Kvitova next. Halep has a 3-0 win-to-loss record against the Czech. Unlike her previous match, her quarter-final against Johanna Konta was no marathon and Kvitova wrapped up a straight set 6-3, 6-4 in 90 minutes.

Kvitova converted two of the four break points on Konta’s serve and saved all four break points on her serve. Agnieszka Radwanska looked to be cruising against Svetlana Kuznetsova, but the Russian stormed back into the match in the latter two sets to win 1-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4.

In the second set tie-break, the ninth seed had three set points but wasn’t able to convert any of those. She also went on to save a match point before winning the set and taking the match into the decider. A solitary break of Radwanska’s serve eventually saw Kuznetsova serve out the match in the 10th game.

Dominika Cibulkova had to fight past Barbora Strycova to book her place in the semis. Cibulkova won the opening set, but lost the second set after having recovered an earlier break of serve by the Czech. In the final set, it was Strycova who broke twice but both times she failed to consolidate.

Finally, in the 10th game, Cibulkova got the decisive break to get the win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. She will now face Kuznetsova in the semi-final. IN THE NEXT PAGE: WTA TASHKENT RESULTS Also Read Novak Djokovic pulls out from China Open
