WTA TIANJIN and HONG KONG: Upsets brew in Tianjin, Top-seed Kerber moves ahead in Hong Kong

Three spots remain in the qualification for the Singapore finals. And the three tournaments of Tianjin, Hong Kong and Linz taking place this week are of utmost importance for the contenders. For those players, who stand in to qualify with a chance, doing well in these events is necessary as it’s crucial.

But apart from the potential Singapore finalists, there are other players who are contesting in these three tournaments, this week. And here’s how they fared: Tianjin Evgeniya Rodina defeated Christina McHale 6-1, 5-7, 6-0, wrapping up her win in six minutes short of the two-hour mark.

Fifth seed Monica Puig and Lara Arruabarrena will play in the second round after their respective first round wins today. The Puerto Rican won against Kurumi Nara, 6-3, 7-6 and the Spaniard defeated Chinese qualifier Liu Fangzhou 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Alison Riske upset the fourth seed Timea Babos 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will next play Magda Linette, who defeated Serbian qualifier Nina Stojanovic 7-6, 6-0. Two other upsets occurred in the day’s play. Third seed Elena Vesnina was knocked out by American qualifier Shelby Rogers 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.

Eighth seed Yaroslava Shvedova was upset by Naomi Osaka in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Rogers will play Danka Kovinic in the second round, while Osaka will play Lucie Hradecka. Seventh seed Shuai Zhang gave a walkover to compatriot and her first round opponent Shuai Peng that allowed the latte to move ahead in the draw.

Lastly, in the other match featuring two home players, Xinyun Han and wild card Yifan Xu, Han won 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 and will next meet Yafan Wang, another wild card player, who ousted Yulia Putintseva in the first round.
