Quarter-finals were played out across the three WTA tournaments being held this week in Hong Kong, Tianjin and Linz. A day after the top-seed Agnieszka Radwanska bowed out in Tianjin with an injury, it was the turn of the Hong Kong top-seed Angelique Kerber to be shunted out of the event.
Here’s a quick recap of the day’s matches in the two Chinese cities: Hong Kong Eighth seed Daria Gavrilova defeated world no. 1 Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in 74 minutes. The Australian converted six of the eight break points on the German’s serve that seemed to be off.
Kerber had six double faults and won only 42% and 33% points off her first and second serves. Gavrilova’s next opponent will be Kristina Mladenovic, after the Frenchwoman defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands in their quarter-final.
Mladenovic lost the opening set 3-6, but won the latter two sets 6-3, 7-6 to get the win in almost two-and-a-half hours. 17 double faults were strewn across the match from both players, 10 coming from Mladenovic’s racquet and seven from the American’s.
Mattek-Sands won a higher percentage of points as compared to her opponent 74% to 68%, but her struggle to score more off her second serves, she won 38% points off her second serves to Mladenovic’s 53%, saw her lose control of the match during critical moments.
In the second half of the draw, fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki and seventh seed Jelena Jankovic will play the penultimate round. The Dane defeated Qiang Wang 6-3, 7-5, winning 70% points off both her serves. In comparison, the Chinese player won 55% and 62% points off her first and second serves.
Wozniacki was broken only once off the half-a-dozen break points on her serve – all coming in the second set – and converted three of the six break points on her opponent’s serve. The last match of the day saw Jankovic overturn the loss of the first set to win against the feisty Alize Cornet, who was done in by 13 double faults.
Jankovic won 61% points off her first serves to Cornet’s 64%. In terms of break point conversion, the Serbian converted seven of the 13 break point chances off the Frenchwoman’s serve and saved eight of the 13 break point chances Cornet had on her serve. TIANJIN RESULTS ON PAGE TWO
