WTA LUXEMBOURG and MOSCOW: Wozniacki tames Lisicki, Kuznetsova's still in hunt for Finals' Berth

It was business as usual in Luxembourg and Moscow, though the latter tournament had quite an unexpected ending for one of its players. Third seed Carla Suarez Navarro was forced to retire partway in her opening round match against Daria Gavrilova with an injury to her wrist.

The result also meant that her chances of qualifying for the Singapore finals also ended, with the race now running two-way between Johanna Konta and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Here’s a quick look at the results of the day’s play.

Luxembourg Second Round Andrea Petkovic upset fourth seed Caroline Garcia in the second round 6-1, 6-1 and will play the winner between Kristyna Pliskova and Lauren Davis in the quarter-finals. Eighth seed Johanna Larsson defeated Mona Barthel in straight sets as well 6-1, 6-4.

In a contest between two Czechs, Denisa Allertova defeated qualifier Tereza Smitkova 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. In the quarter-final, Allertova will face third seed Kiki Bertens, who defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-1. Monica Niculescu will take on second seed Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-final.

The Romanian defeated wild card Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The Dane meanwhile came back from a set down to Sabine Lisicki to wrap up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win. Moscow Second Round Svetlana Kuznetsova made it to the last eight defeating Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-5.

As the Russian tries to keep herself in contention for a place in the WTA finals, she will next face ninth seed Timea Babos. Babos defeated Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 6-4. Fourth seed Elina Svitolina and lucky loser Ana Konjuh will play the quarters.

Svitolina defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-2, while Konjuh received a walkover from Anna Blinkova. Daria Kasatkina defeated fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova to advance to the quarters as well. The eighth seed will play Julia Goerges, who upset fifth seed Elena Vesnina 7-5, 6-0.

Daria Gavrilova moved into the quarter-finals as well after Carla Suarez Navarro retired in their second round match. Though the Australian led by a set, she wouldn’t have wanted to go through in such a manner. Brief Scores Summary Luxembourg Second Round [1] Petra Kvitova (CZE) def.
