WTA LUXEMBOURG and MOSCOW: Wozniacki's Run Ends, Kuznetsova Survives

An exciting day was played out in Luxembourg and Moscow today. There were a couple of upsets in both tournaments, though mostly the handful of remaining seeds went through to the penultimate stages of the events. Here’s a recap of the day’s action: Luxembourg Quarter-finals Petra Kvitova had an undramatic passage into the semi-finals after her tough quarter-final on Wednesday.

The Czech defeated eighth seed Johanna Larsson in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. She next awaits the winner between Andrea Petkovic and Lauren Davis in the semi-final. Second seed Caroline Wozniacki gave a walkover to Monica Niculescu before the start of their quarter-final match, withdrawing because of illness.

The Romanian will now play third seed Kiki Bertens, who defeated Denisa Allertova 6-0, 6-4. Moscow Quarter-finals Top-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova battled hard against ninth seed Timea Babos to keep her hopes of Singapore qualification alive.

Kuznetsova won the first set 7-5, but dropped the second in the tie-break 7-6. She regained her form in the third, crushing the Hungarian 6-2 to set a semi-final clash against fourth seed Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian defeated lucky loser Ana Konjuh 6-1, 6-1.

Eighth seed Daria Kasatkina was upset by Julia Goerges 7-5, 6-1. The German will take on either seventh seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Daria Gavrilova in the semi-final. Brief Scores Summary Luxembourg Quarter-finals [1] Petra Kvitova (CZE) def.
