Though withdrawals began the WTA event in Sydney, there weren’t any glaring upsets in the first round action taking place on Monday. The following is a quick recap of the day’s action: Sixth seed Johanna Konta defeated lucky loser Arina Rodionova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Third seed Dominika Cibulkova also reached the second round with a win over German Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-0. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Australian Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-1, but Daria Gavrilova kept up the Aussie hopes defeating lucky loser Donna Vekic 6-3, 7-6 (1).
10th seed Caroline Wozniacki also reached the second round with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist, Monica Puig. Eighth seed Elena Vesnina had to retire in her match against Coco Vandeweghe while trailing 2-6, 0-4.
Vesnina’s doubles partner, Ekaterina Makarova also bowed out of the competition losing to Barbora Strycova, 3-6, 5-7. In the match between two qualifier, Kateryna Bondarenko and Christina McHale, the latter won in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Ninth seed Roberta Vinci however ended the hopes of Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. Another qualifier, Ying-Ying Duan defeated lucky loser Irina Falconi 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 to reach the second round. WTA Sydney First Round  Johanna Konta (GBR) def.
