The second round matches at the WTA Sydney Open saw some big upsets on Tuesday. The upsets raised questions about the seeds’ chances at the Australian Open that will start next week, one of whom is the world no. 1 Angelique Kerber, who is the defending champion of the season’s first Major.
The following is the recap of the day’s play: Daria Kasatkina upset Angelique Kerber 7-6, 6-1 to get the biggest win of her career, until now. Kerber’s upset was preceded by wild card Eugenie Bouchard defeating third seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-3 and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeating the fifth seed, defending champion and fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 6-3.
Barbora Strycova defeated ninth seed Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-3. 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 7-5 and sixth seed Johanna Konta defeated Daria Gavrilova 6-1, 6-3, and second seed Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Christina McHale 7-6, 6-1 in the last match of the day.
