US Open champion Sam Stosur was knocked out in the first round of the UNICEF Open in Netherlands. Stosur, who reached the smei finals in Paris, lost to Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens. Flipkens won 7-6, 6-3 for her first ever top 10 win.
"I think I needed to be 200% to win against her because she's a Top 5 player," Flipkens commented. "This is by far my best result ever and it's all the more enjoyable after the wrist injury and other health problems I've had in the last year.
"In the beginning I wasn't feeling totally confident and fell behind.
But once I started to feel comfortable I began to enjoy myself and at the end I was playing really well."
French Open finalist Sara Errani came crashing back to earth losing to Kateryna Bondarenko 57 63 64, while former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beat No.5 seed Maria Kirilenko, 64 36 75.
"It was really tough and I think I served well and mixed it up for most of the match," Schiavone told the press.
"The third set was tight and she had chances but I think I was just a little bit more courageous in the end, which made the difference."
