WTA Kuala Lumpur to disappear from the calendar, replaced by Palermo

There will be several changes in the 2018 WTA Calendar. Tokyo International event will be moved to Yiroshima in mid-September on outdoor hard-courts, Biel is relocated to Lugano in April on clay, Bastad will be played in Moscow in July on clay, but not only: Kuala Lumpur, that was played on hard-courts in late February, disappeared from the 2018 calendar.

Kuala Lumpur will be replaced by Palermo in 2019. The Italian event comes back in the female professional calendar for first time since 2013, when they sold the licence to Malaysian organizers. In a press conference call, Italian organizers explained Kuala Lumpur failed to meet payment obligations and the relocation will be made official during Wimbledon next year.

Palermo will be played on outdoor clay-courts from 22 to 28 July 2019. The tournament has much history, as it was played from 1988 to 2013. Palermo's future is uncertain, as they will see how economic situation will be after 2019 edition to think if keep the tournament or definitely sell the licence.

Kuala Lumpur was first played in 2010, when Alysa Kleybanova won the title. It featured Karolina Pliskova, Ashleigh Barty and Donna Vekic winning their first title there. Earlier this year in February here the Australian defeated Nao Hibino in the final.
