WTA Hobart: Elise Mertens safely through, further seeds fall

Tuesday’s action saw the final two matches of round one played at the WTA Hobart International. Both the seeds in those matches fell at the first hurdle, as Czech Katerina Siniakova, fresh from her final loss to Simona Halep at the Shenzhen Open, lost to the USA’s Alison Riske in three sets, and Irina-Camelia Begu was defeated by qualifier Monica Niculescu in the all-Romanian tie 6-3, 6-2.

Half of the second round was also played, as second seed Elise Mertens progressed, beating Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Croatia’s Donna Vekic and Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu also went through, before Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko conquered in the late match over Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-2.

Top seed Shuai Zhang of China contests her second round match against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka on Wednesday along with the remaining round two matches.
