Round two was somewhat delayed as the rains of recent days returned and caused many ties to be suspended. A handful of ties did manage to reach completion, though the majority are left to be finished or played in their entirety tomorrow.

Only six matches were completed in the women’s section. The number two seed Russian Evgeniya Rodina and the number five seed Belgian Yanina Wickmayer both fell at the second hurdle.

Wickmayer in a three-set tussle to Australian teenage talent Priscilla Hon 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. And Rodina lost to Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in two 6-2, 6-2. Julia Boserup from the USA, also seeded 24, lost to Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-4.

However, there were wins for other seeds Sara Errani [20] of Italy over China’s Yafan Wang 6-3, 6-4, Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum [11] against Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic 6-3, 6-4, and number 13 seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic defeated China’s Fangzhou Liu 6-1, 6-1.
