Angelique Kerber withdraws from the Mutua Madrid Open

Tough setback for Angelique Kerber. The German player has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open that starts on Saturday. The former world No. 1 is still dealing with a right thigh injury. Her compatriot Laura Siegemund won't be able to play due to a calf injury.

Earlier this week Kerber had said that she would do everything to come back as soon as possible. He is coming from her second-round loss to Anett Kontaveit at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, in the match, she had retired when was down 6-0 2-0.

Kerber now plans to play Rome Open and Roland Garros. In Madrid she achieved her best result in 2013, losing to Ana Ivanovic in the quarter-finals. This year she had a good campaign so far, reaching Australian Open semifinals.
