Tennis - Former World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva will compete at the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament next month, alongside former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli. Zvonareva is a former Wimbledon runner-up, having reached the finals at the grass court major in 2010.

The Russian also reached the finals of the US Open in 2010 and won the women's doubles title at the US Open in 2006 and Australian Open in 2012 and she also won the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon in 2006. She took a break from the tour in 2015 to have a baby.

According to Liverpool Echo, Tournament co-ordinator Anders Borg commented, “We are delighted that a player of Vera’s quality has agreed to play this year’s event. With Marion also taking part the Ladies event will be one of the strongest we have attracted to Liverpool for a long time.” She is currently ranked No.

145 in the world. The Russian said she was not planning to come back after giving birth but only wanted to keep fit but once she stated training, she realised she still has a passion for the game and decided to give the comeback a try.

Other players who have confirmed their participation in the event include Italian Corinna Dentoni and Romania's Alexandra Cadantu on the women's side and Portugal's Gastao Elias, the Skupski brothers of Britain, American Robert Kendrick and 19-year-old Brit Adam Jones, who won the Liverpool International qualification tournament in 2017.
