Jelena Jankovic, seeded no. 2, needed three hours to beat Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova in the first rund of the WTA Texas Tennis Open. Jankovic, a former world no. 1, dropped from no. 18 to no. 34 in the latest WTA rankings after a poor season this year.
is now the top seed here after the withdrawal of Angelique Kerber. Jankovic finally won 67(7) 76(4) 61 win. "I got a lot of practice in that first match" Jankovic commetned later. "It was a good match and I'm happy I was able to win at the end.
"The first two sets were so close, but I managed to tough it out, fighting for every point and then in the third set I started to play much better.
I was returning much better and also much more solid, making her work for every point and this really helped me get over the line."
Other advancing to the second round inclde third seed Roberta Vinci, sixth seed Peng Shuai and former Wimbledon semi finalist Mirjana Lucic.
