Reigning doubles champion pulls out of Wimbledon!

31-year-old Russian Elena Vesnina had played at Wimbledon for the first time in 2006 at the age of 19 and she never missed the most important tournament in the world of tennis since then, reaching the semi-final in singles in 2016 and playing in two mixed doubles finals in 2011 and 2012 with Bhupathi and Paes. In 2010, Elena lost the doubles final with Vera Zvonareva and another one in 2015 with Ekaterina Makarova, losing a tight encounter against Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis.

Last year Vesnina finally went all the way at Wimbledon, with her and Makarova demolishing Hao-Ching Chan and Monica Niculescu 6-0 6-0 in the most one-sided Wimbledon doubles final ever! The reigning doubles world number 1 will not be able to defend her title at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, though, missing her first Wimbledon in 12 years without giving the particular reason for pulling out from the third Grand Slam of the season.

Elena lost in the opnening round of Roland Garros in both singles and doubles and she hasn't played since, looking to make her comeback during the North American hard court swing. ALSO READ: 14-year-old Cori Gauff shifts her junior form to the pro circuit once again
