Elena Vesnina withdraws from Moscow River Cup

After nine years, the WTA event in Bastad had to be canceled and it found its new home in Moscow from 2018. Moscow River Cup is an International $750,000 event on outdoor clay courts at the Russian biggest tennis complex - National Tennis Center of Juan Antonio Samaranch between July 23-29. Julia Goerges and Daria Kasatkina will lad the field, together with Anastasija Sevastova, Mihaela Buzarnescu, Laura Siegemund and Katerina Siniako, while Vera Zvonareva and Anastasia Potapova have both received a wild card to enter the main draw.

One Russian who will not be in the draw is Elena Vesnina, who hasn't played since the opening round exit at Roland Garros, missing Wimbledon and the entire grass season. The 31-year-old had never missed Wimbledon since 2006 prior to this season and she is obviously not ready to come back in action in front of the home fans.

Elena has played 11 WTA tournaments in 2018 so far, reaching the quarter-final in Dubai and losing in the first or the second round eight times. As usual, she had more success in doubles, losing in the final of the Australian Open and Indian Wells together with Ekaterina Makarova before winning the title in Madrid.

"I am very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play at this amazing Moscow River Cup event. I am sure this tournament will take a big part in your hearts and will make a history of one of the best tournaments in the WTA calendar.

Looking forward to see you all next year in Moscow."
