A former American Top 30 player Bryan Baker has shared a news that world number 17 Madison Keys has started to work with Jim Madrigal, a former coach of Baker itself and Tennys Sandgren. Madison had part ways with David Taylor and she has chosen Madrigal as the new coach before the start of 2019 season when she will try to crack the Top 10 again.
Serving as the men's tennis head coach at the Belmont University for 18 years, Madrigal was able to improve his coaching abilities after having a chance to work with various players and he turned Sandgren into a Top 50 player and a Grand Slam quarter-finalist in 12-month time! Now, embraces a new challenge and he will try to get Madison Keys back on the winning way and make her a contender for the top ranking positions just like she was in 2016 when she was world number 8.
The 23-year-old American is currently ranked 17th and she reached the semi-final at both Roland Garros and the US Open, backed by the quarter-final run in Melbourne. She was unable to give her 100% during the entire season, though, struggling with a right wrist injury that forced her to miss San Jose and Montreal and not being able to play between Roland Garros and Wimbledon as well.
In addition, Madison had to leave the tournaments in the early stage way too often, failing to win two matches in nine events she played, something she will have to work on with Madrigal during their first training runs in Orlando in the following weeks.
“There will definitely be adjustments moving from the men’s to the women’s game,” said Madrigal for Tennis Takes. “My focuses are concentrated on helping her be the best Madison Keys possible within her natural abilities. She has already exhibited the ability to beat anyone in the world. We will be focused on bringing a high level of play on a more consistent basis. I could not possibly be more excited to begin working with Madison. She’s such a great player, an amazing person, and is eager to improve her game in a handful of areas that we both agree will put her in a position to have a positive and exciting 2019.”
