Here is where Simona Halep will start her 2019 season

Seven top-10 WTA players have committed to the Sydney International that will take place from 7th to 13th January 2019. The tournament will mark the start of Simona Halep's new season. The world no. 1 will not defend her title at the Shenzhen Open and will start the tennis year just before the Australian Open, in order to have one more week to recover from a back injury.

Angelique Kerber will try to retain her crown, in the previous edition she defeated Ashleigh Barty in a straight-set final. Also Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Kiki Bertens will play. It will be an important tournament for Camila Giorgi who reached the semi-finals earlier this year losing to Kerber.

The Italian defeated Stephens, Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska in her route to the semis. Announcing her appearance, Stephens said: 'The Sydney International always attracts a top quality draw so you know you’re going to have to bring your A-game from the outset, no matter who you’re playing.

I really enjoyed playing earlier this year, and it was also fun seeing some of the amazing sights around Sydney. I’m looking forward to having a strong start to the season on the court, winning some matches ahead of Melbourne and perhaps squeezing in some more sightseeing before the action starts.” The Tournament Director Lawrence Robertson said he was happy about Stephens' participation.

'Sloane has backed up her US Open triumph last year by reaching another Grand Slam final and firmly establishing herself as one of the top players in the game today,' Robertson said.
