WTA - Canadian Rebecca Marino returns from sabbatical to win ITF title

Last July, Canadian Rebecca Marino was conisdered oone of the rising stars on the WTA Tour. The big serving Canadian had risen to the top 40 in the world rankings. But then came the physical and mental burnout forcing Marino to take time off from the circuit to recharge her batteries.

Several others in her position may have continued to play in the hope of gaining form or defending ranking points. But not Marino. “It was definitely a difficult decision to take some time off,” the 21-year-old said.

“It was just at the beginning of the year/middle of the year. It’s never easy to take a step back. I was at the point where my body was telling me I needed a break. And I just thought in order to prolong my career, and make sure that I’m able to perform at my peak, it was ultimately the best decision.

And I’m still fully confident I made the right decision.” Marino did not play for seven months and only came back to the tour last month with a ranking of no. 767. Her time away seems to have paid off as she won a $25,000 Challenger in Rock Hill, S.C., this past weekend.
