Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic will take place at the State University Tennis Center in San Jose between July 29 - August 4, standing as the longest-running women-only professional tennis tournament in the world that has gathered some of the best players on the Tour since the first Open era event in 1972.
Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters have all won the title in San Jose and the organizers have been drawing a strong field of players for 2019 edition as well.
Garbine Muguruza, Victoria Azarenka and Roland Garros semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova will fight for the title under the Californian sun and another young contender is signing to play in San Jose, with the 20-year-old Sofia Kenin joining the action.
Starting the season from outside the top-50, Sofia has played some impressive tennis in the first half of the season, lifting the first WTA title and scoring some big wins that propel her closer to the place in the top-20.
After losing in the second round in Auckland, Kenin went all the way in Hobart for that first WTA crown, beating Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Kirsten Flipkens, Alize Cornet and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova for the best possible result at the beginning of the new year.
Simona Halep prevailed against Sofia at the Australian Open and she was in another final in Acapulco, losing it to Yafan Wang 7-5 in the third. The results in the following weeks on the home soil were not that good and Sofia found the winning formula again on clay, reaching the third round in Rome and the fourth at Roland Garros after an incredible win over Serena Williams. Sofia has played in San Jose once before, losing to Johanna Konta in the second round 12 months ago.
