WTA Brisbane - Kerber and Errani continue surge with first round wins

Two of the most improved players of the 2012 season started their 2013 campaigns with first round wins at the WTA Brisbane International. 4th seed Angelique Kerber scored athree set win over Georga's Anna 62 46 62 while French Open finalist Sara Errani beat qualifier Olga Puchkova 61 63.

Errani, who also topped the doubles rankings in 2012, commented, "It's tough to play a qualifier right at the start of the season, because they've already played three good matches to get into the main draw,.

But I felt good on the court, better than in practice. And while it was hot out there, I had some good preparation in the off-season.
"I also had a week at home and a week in the Maldives. I'm ready to play." In other first round matches on Monday there were wins for the struggling Sabine Lisicki, the rising American Sloane Stephens and former world no.
