Former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli began her 2013 season with a win in the first round of the new WTA event in China - the Shenzen Open. On Monday, Bartoli defeated Chan Wing-Yau 61 60. Bartoli commented after her win, "After a long break, it's pretty hard to come back to competitive tennis and be match ready, but I felt great in that department.
She had difficulty with my game and I felt I was really in control of the match and I'm pleased with my performance." She will now meet qualifier Stefanie Voegele, who beat Hungarian teenager Timea Babos, 64 75. In other matches, fifth seed Klara Zakopalova scored 61 61 win over fellow Czech Andrea Hlavackova, 8th seed Bojanna Jovanovski defeated Alexandra Cadantu, 63 61 and sixth seed and local favourite Shuai Peng defeated Britain's Anne Keothavong, 64 60.
Peng commented, "I'm really happy to come to Shenzhen and get the chance to play at home before the Australian Open. "It's my first match so I was a little bit nervous, but I got great support from the fans, which helped me out a lot.
"Playing a qualifier is difficult as she had warmed up through her qualifying matches and was quicker than me in the beginning."
