Former world no. 1s Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic won their opening round matches at the Australian Open on Monday and moved one step away from an all-Serbian third round clash which many fans are anticiapting. Jankovic played in the morning session and beat Swede Joanna Larsson 6-2 6-2.
She needs to beat Maria Joao Koehler of Portugal, who beat Italian Karin Knapp 3-6 6-3 6-3 next, in order to keep her date agianst her Serbian countrywoman and rival, Ivanovic. After the win, Jankovic commented, “First matches are never easy.
I didn´t know really my opponent. It was our first match against each other. So I did enough to win. But obviously there was a lot of things that I could have done better, that I´ve done well.” 13th seeded Ivanovic played on Rod Laver Arena in the night session and had little trouble with Hunagrian Melinda Czink 6-2, 6-1.
When asked baout the possible third round mahc, Jankovic commented, “To be honest I´m not thinking too far ahead. I just want to go one match at a time … and we see how it goes. Right now (my coach and I are) just working and trying to get back in form, in the shape. My goal is to get to the top again.”
