The 20-year-old Sofia Kenin has been one of the most improved players of the season, kicking off the action from outside the top-50 and finishing on the verge of the top-20 after claiming three WTA titles. Sofia is currently in Shenzhen, serving as an alternate if someone withdraws from the WTA Finals, finishing the season on a high note and hoping for more in 2020 when she should attack the place in the top-10.
Sofia will make her fourth trip to Charleston next April, joining the strong field at the Volvo Car Open. The 20th edition of the WTA Premier event on Daniel Island in Charleston will take place between April 4-12, 2020, with a notable field of players that will fight for the title.
The defending champion Madison Keys and Garbine Muguruza were the first confirmed competitors, followed by the top-10 star Belinda Bencic and one of the most promising youngsters Amanda Anisimova. Doing their homework studiously, the organizers announced Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, 2018 finalists Kiki Bertens and Julia Goerges for another strong trio of competitors, backed by a former champion and a Major winner Sloane Stephens.
"I have had an amazing season and will be looking to build upon it in 2020," said Kenin. "I have always enjoyed my time in Charleston at the Volvo Car Open and am hoping to go even further in the tournament next year."
"Sofia climbed the junior rankings and has now solidified herself as a true contender and top player in the tennis world," said Eleanor Adams, Volvo Car Open Tournament Manager. "Our fans have the opportunity to cheer on the future generation of tennis, and Sofia's fourth appearance in our field solidifies our commitment to always finding and attracting rising stars."
