Caroline Wozniacki to retire from tennis after 2020 Australian Open

Caroline Wozniacki had shared her doubts about whether or not playing in 2020 already some weeks ago in an interview. Now she has taken the final decision. Wozniacki will play the ASB Classic in Auckland from 6 January, then she is committed to the Australian Open that starts on Monday 20.

The first calendar Grand Slam tournament of the year will be the last event played by Wozniacki in her professional career. Melbourne is the place where she won her only Major title, in 2018 defeating Simona Halep in a three-set final.

“I’ve thought about it for a long time", said Wozniacki. "It’s obviously not an easy decision, and I don’t think it ever would be. Tennis is something that I’ve done for my entire life, and I wake up and I practice and I play tournaments, but there’s so many other things out there that I’d love to do”.

Wozniacki did not have an incredible 2019 season but she is still one of the players to look at. That's why she believes it's her best time now to call it a career. “I wanted to finish playing when I still had this love for the game,” admitted the Dane who plans to become a mother.

She got married to the NBA star David Lee earlier this year in June in Italy. "We want to start a family. And I can’t wait to spend more time with my friends and family that I haven’t been able to over the past 20 years that I’ve been traveling."
