Canada's Rebecca Marino has revealed that the main reason that she is stepping away from tennis is her struggled with depression. Marino spoke last week about how cyberbullying was one of the reasons that contributed to her decision to take a break form the sport last year.
On Tuesday, she announced she was taking another break from the game but did nto say that she is permanently retired. Marino said she has been struggling with depression for the last four to six years and has been on medication for the last two years.
She said in ehr press conference that seeking help for her depression was the best thing that she ever did and hoped that by talking about it, she would encourage more people to seek help and not feel stigmatised by the illness.
Marino said, "I made it to No. 38 in the world. “I’m not going to downplay that or forget that. I’ve been to places in the world I wouldn’t have been otherwise. This (tennis) is just one chapter in my life. I have many more things to look forward to.”
