Tennis - WTA tennis stars Maria Sakkari and Donna Vekic were recently featured on the cover of ELLE magazine in their respective countries.

Sakkari is ranked No.
21 in the world currently was featured on the cover of ELLE Greece while Vekic, who is currently ranked No. 24 in the world, was featured on the cover of ELLE Croatia. According to the Greek Herald website, Sakkari spoke about her tennis career and how tennis runs in the family in the magazine interview.
Sakkari, whose grandfather played in the Davis Cup and her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, reached a career-best ranking of No. 43 in the world, says, “People, when we achieve something big, we forget the small. But these are the most important."
“My mother didn’t want any of her children to play tennis. She knew that you have to sacrifice a lot to play tennis. She didn’t want us to suffer. " “I actually started playing tennis because my brother was playing.
I really liked it and then I asked my mum if I could play more. I started playing with my grandfather and I was like: ‘I want to play every day’”. Sakkari also says that women athletes should support one another because in sports, they experience gender discrimination.

Meanwhile, on the courts, Donna Vekic, seeded No.
15 at the Western & Southern Open in New York, was beaten in the first round by former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. On the other hand, Maria Sakkari scored a good win over American teen Coco Gauff 6-1. 6-3 in the first round.
Vekic will now be looking ahead to the US Open which will also be held in New York and starts on August 31st. Sakkari will play the winner of the match between Yulia Putintseva and Zhang Shuai in the second round. Vekic is also part of the WTA Player Council.
