WTA Family Circle Cup - 19 year old American Jessica Pegula scores career best win over Mona Barthel

Tennis - With the top 8 seeds getting byes in the first round of the WTA Family Circle Cup in Charleston, some of them were in early second round action on Tuesday at the green clay court event. And while top seed Serena Williams advanced, 7th seed Carla Suarez Navarro and 8th seed Mona Barthel were upset.

American qualifier Jessica Pegula scored the biggest win of her career with a 7-6, 6-1 win over the big hitting German Mona Barthel. Barthel, currently ranked inside the top 25 of the world rankings for the first time, had four set points in the first set but failed to capitalise on them and then went on to lose in straight sets.

Pegula had come into the main draw after winning two matches in qualifying and her first round win here was her first ever WTA main draw victory. The American saved a matchpoint in that first round win over Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza in her first match as a Top 20 player, 62 64, while Barthel missed four set points in the first set and lost to American qualifier Jessica Pegula, 76(4) 61.

Pegula, who grew up close to Hilton Head, commented, "It's an advantage, especially when she had a first round bye and everyone has been on hardcourt. Every once in a while a lot of these girls are qualifying and then doing well, and they'll probably keep doing well because they have had a couple matches on the stuff.

It really helps." Meanwhile, Suarez Navarro lost her first match as a top 20 player - going down in straight sets to Swiss Stefanie Voegele. 11th seed Sorana Cirstea and 12th seed Varvara Lepchenko also advanced to the third round.
