Tennis - With the main draw matches at the WTA Porsche Grand Prix getting underway only on Tuesday, Monday saw only one doubles match ad the completion of the singles qualifying matches. And it was American Bethanie Mattek-Sands who was involved in both events.
The 28 year old former world no. 30 scored as easy 63 64 win over Anna-Lena Friedsam to secure her place in the main draw of the indoor clay court event. She then teamed up with best friend and doubles partner Sania Mirza to upset the no.
2 seeds Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik, 76(3) 75 in the first round of the doubles draw. Speaking to the media later, Mattek-Sands commented, "I feel really good about this day. I played two tough matches and got two wins, and I think I have a day off tomorrow, which will be much appreciated! We played Nadia and Kata in the finals of Dubai this year and it was a tough match, we were actually down in the super tie-breaker and came back to win.
They're always tough. They've been doing so well this year, they're one of the most consistent teams out there, which is why they're No.2 right now. The American will meet Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in the first round.
In other qualifying action, former Wimbledon semi finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and German Dinah Pfizenmaier also advanced to the main draw with wins. SINGLES - QUALIFYING - FINAL ROUND
