Tennis - World no. 1 Serena Williams is through to the quarter finals of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open. The top ranked Williams, who won here last year, defeated 13th seed Maria Kirilenko 63 61. Serena won 10 of the last 11 games in the match.
Serena needs to do well here this week. Her no. 1 ranking is under threat from world no. 2 Maria Sharapova, who is also through to the quarter finals. Speaking to the media later, Serena commented, "I just felt really relaxed today - I was just taking my time.
I think the match was okay. I haven't had a chance to talk about it with my team yet, but I will. I'm a perfectionist - I always look for things I can try and do better. When we get together I'll see what I can do better." Williams has won 25 of her last 26 matches on the surface.
"I think for one you have to be mentally strong, because you're going to play a lot of players that get a lot of balls back and you can't get frustrated. I also think you have to be fit to be able to do pretty good in the longer rallies on clay.
And I think you have to be able to slide a little bit." If Serena loses earlier than Sharapova, she will lose her no. 1 ranking
