ATP Rome: Wawrinka, Murray, Fognini and the day 1 Highlights

Fabio Fognini overcomes the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome on day 1, beating Andy Murray in three sets: 6-4 4-6 6-4. Third victory of the season for the Italian and first victory after the long stop, which caused him to miss important tournaments such as Madrid: a marathon that lasted just under three hours to conquer the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.

The beginning is one that portends a long marathon: an experience Murray is used to this year, while Fognini has a glorious past in this context. In fact, in the first game, the Briton was forced to cancel five break points so as not to start immediately with a disadvantage.

In the second service game of the Grand Slam champion, the script repeats itself. This time the Ligurian tennis player does not miss the opportunity and conquers the break with the first available ball. That advantage alone is enough for him to win the set 6-4: Fognini manages to always stay on the baseline, while Murray makes the mistake of retreating more and more, to the point of being disarmed by his opponent's perfect shots.

In the second set the road is all uphill. Murray gains confidence, he has approached the baseline and has begun to find solutions he didn't trust before, above all the long line. This and a few mistakes too many led to the British double break.

The Italian, however, did not give up and, albeit with difficulty, losing another round of service, the blue recovered both breaks and moved up to 4-5, with the possibility of serving to even the score. Here, he falls into the black hole that was seen at the beginning of the set and gives the second set to the Grand Slam champion.

The third is yet another story. Fognini clings to his last strength and pushes without making a mistake, while Murray makes much more mistakes, concedes much more. Thus the break in favor of the blue comes immediately and takes the lead in the decisive partial.

An advantage that he manages to keep until the end and that gives him the final victory. There is the victory of Stan Wawrinka: the 3-time Grand Slam champion beat Ivashka by two sets to zero, with a clear 6-2, 6-4. The Swiss tennis player will face Grigor Dimitrov in the second round, both on Novak Djokovic's course in Rome.

Thanasi Kokkinakis flies to the second round taking advantage of Munar's withdrawal. Here he will face Jannik Sinner, making his debut in this edition of the Internazionali d'Italia.
