Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in his career, probably taking a decisive step towards qualifying for the last four, at the ATP Finals 2023. The young Italian - supported by the crowd at the PalaAlpitour in Turin - put the world number 1 in difficulty throughout the match, showing his considerable progress, deserving the victory.
And now the qualification for the semi-finals is one step away: a set against Holger Rune should be enough for Sinner, to reach the best four of the year-end Masters.
The words of the young Italian and the highlights of the match
In the post-match press conference, Jannik shared all his joy with his fans and journalists, explaining: "There is no more beautiful place to beat the number one in the world than this.
The atmosphere was fantastic. The crowd it helped me a lot. As I said on the first day, it is a privilege for me to play in Turin. I was expecting a really tough match. The crowd tried to help me. I'm obviously very happy with how I channeled everything in the right direction.
There is always a nice atmosphere in Italy when a local tennis player plays. I'm happy to have been part of this atmosphere. I always say that when you are 22 you can only improve and learn. This year I trained very hard and my growth path was excellent.
I didn't play some tournaments to train and improve physically. This helped me arrive at the end of the season quite fresh, not only from a physical point of view but also mentally. Even after the match played at Wimbledon, despite the defeat in three sets, I said I felt closer to Novak.
I was quite confident today, I thought I could play a good match. Beating the number one here in Turin - a tennis player who has won 24 Grand Slam tournaments - with such an atmosphere, I think is among the best victories of my career."
