Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, one of the most promising young player of the ATP Tour, was the first tennis player born in 2003 to win an ATP Tour match, at the Rio de Janerio tournament: he did it against his countryman Albert Ramos Vinolas, in a 3-hour and 36 minutes match, won with the final score of 7-6 (2) 4-6 7-6 (2).

In this tournament, played on clay-courts, there was the outbreak of Foxtenn technology, an electronic call system in a tournament that uses a quantity of high definition and high speed cameras to identify the real trajectory of the shots: this technology was preferred to Hawk-Eye, the most used internationally so far.
