Novak Djokovic qualified for the second round of Roland Garros 2021. The Serbian tennis player, world and seed no.1, and his first-round rival, Tennys Sandgren, had already met three times in their career before tonight, never on cay-courts.
Despite the change in surface, the result once again rewarded the 18-time Grand Slam champion, who started his Paris expedition well. Djokovic has never lost in the first round at Roland Garros and, thanks to his victory over the American, recorded his seventeenth consecutive winning debut in Paris.
Sandgren never scored in response on any of these occasions and Djokovic managed to avoid obstacles not without concern. When it came time to move forward two sets, Djokovic made the Djokovic and finished in fluency. In the third set, Sandgren resisted Djokovic's attacks in the first game by nullifying two break points, but then had to suffer the brunt of the blows of the Serbian, who surprised him twice more in the service and forced him to a resounding defeat.
