Roger Federer was celebrated in Shanghai, on a truly special day at the Chinese ATP Master 1000. Between the two quarter-finals scheduled for Friday, the prestigious tournament had the honor of hosting the Swiss champion in the center of the court.
The crowd went wild for the 42-year-old from Basel, who spoke to the numerous people in the stands together with the emerging player and protagonist during the competition Zhizhen Zhang and the Chinese tennis legend Na Li.
Federer shared a beautiful moment as he addressed the crowd to thank them for the love they have shown throughout his career. The organizers also projected some images relating to several exciting matches played by the winner of 20 Grand Slam titles in Shanghai: among these, there could not fail to be the 2017 final won by the Swiss with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Roger Federer celebrated in Shanghai, the crowd goes wild!
The champion born in 1981 naturally spoke during the event in honor of him and declared to Sky Sport: "I am a happy player to have retired, as is Na Li. There will be no return.
I had a lot of fun on the circuit, I reached the limit and squeezed every last drop out of myself. I had nothing left to give. Now just a super fan like all of you. I miss those moments, but now a new chapter has begun. The last year has been amazing.
Less tennis, but more tennis with my children." Then the memory of that iconic match with his friend Rafael Nadal: "I played very well in that 2017 final. I had a fantastic year when I came back from the knee problems. It was the last time I won the Shanghai Masters.
I'm happy to have won because I love the battles I had with Rafa. I have played against him on many occasions, on almost every major stage in the world. I'm glad we could do it here too. Not just once, but three times." Here are some videos shared by We Are Tennis US Open, and ESPN Tenis X accounts:
