Wimbledon: the domain of Pete Sampras
by LORENZO CIOTTI | VIEW 2300
Pete Sampras dominated Wimbledon, winning seven editions of the London Slam, equaling William Renshaw's record, set nearly a century earlier. It seemed impossible for anyone to break the American's records at Church Road, but Roger Federer, in 2017, by winning his 8th title, became the most successful tennis player in Wimbledon history.
This year Wimbledon will be one of the most controversial editions in tennis history, for several reasons. Of all, of course, there are two. The decision of the organizers of the tournament to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players, then the harsh reactions of the ATP and WTA.
Suffice it to say that tennis players will not be able to defend the points obtained last season. A considerable damage for Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini. Among the surprises, the great, highly anticipated return to the court of Serena Williams, one year after the injury right on the lawns of Church Road.
