Eighteen year old WTA world no. 150 Emma Raducanu won the US Open 2021 women's singles by beating her young Canadian peer Leylah Fernandez in straight sets, with the final score of 6-4 6-3, dominating the final and winning a well-deserved and unexpected title.
She did it all without losing a set in 10 games and getting her opponents to 5 games in a single set on only one occasion, in the second round of qualifying against Georgian Blokvadze. In this video below, the young winner of the US Open 2021 celebrates her victory from New York by climbing the stands of Arthur Ashe Stadium, embracing and joyfully joining her staff members in her box.
With this result, the young Briton will gain tomorrow from position no.150 in the WTA ranking to position no. 23. Leylah Fernandez, on the other hand, rises from n. 73 to n. 28 of the ranking. Emma Raducanu becomes the youngest Grand Slam winner since 17-year-old Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in July 2004.
She is also the first British woman to win a Slam title since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon 1977 44 years ago.
